It happens all the time around Norhtern Kentucky. You go to a bar in Covington, Newport, Florence, Ludlow or any of our other nice neighborhoods and when you come out at 2am you find your car has been broken in to or just vandalized. Finding a broken window in your car is incredibly frustrating, particularly if your possessions were also stolen. Unfortunately, windows are a popular target for vandals, and broken windows are a common result of forcible entry.
When your car has been robbed, or vandalized, first thing to do is make sure you are safe. Before getting in your car, look around to make sure it is safe to enter your car. Then check for your belongings, file a police report, call your insurance company, and fix the damage repaired fast and correctly. Don’t wait, as having a broken car window can lead to interior damage and possibly another theft.
Follow this guideline if your car window, windshield, or back glass is ever broken in NKY.
File a Police Report.
If your car has been vandalized or burgled, it’s important to file a police report as soon as possible. This allows the police to better do their job, recovering any possessions stolen and catching the culprits. It also facilitates your insurance claim: the insurance company may ask for a police report when processing your claim.
Cover the Window.
Be careful, even though the glass on doors is tempered glass and breaks up in to small pieces, it still can cut you. Use a shop vacuum to suck up glass inside and outside your car. Remove all loose car fragments, especially if you have to drive your car as the small pieces of glass and glass dust can be blown around by the wind when you car is moving. Repairing a window or removing any remaining shards may not be possible by yourself. If this is the case call American Auto Glass right away. They can clean up the mess and if your glass type is in stock they can get you fixed right away.
We will carefully clean up the glass shards laying inside your car with a heavy-duty wet-dry vacuum. Then, we will cover up the entire window with plastic, which ensures that the outside elements (rain, snow, wind, debris, etc.) won’t damage your car. This step is especially important not only for the protection of your belongings but also for insurance reasons: if, for example, you leave your broken car window uncovered for a long period of time, and rain damages your car’s electrical system, your insurance company may refuse to cover the resulting damage.
